Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Coal tar collidine fraction is rich in C2-alkylpyridines (collidines: 2-methyl-4-methylpyridine, etc.) alongside retained benzene. The collidine alkaloid matrix introduces additional toxicological concerns beyond the benzene trigger including skin irritancy and respiratory sensitization. As with other coal tar-derived streams, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content of the matrix is a compounding concern. This stream is prohibited under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
Known concerns
- Contains >0.1% benzene — EU Annex II restricted CMR substance
- Category 1A carcinogen under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
- Contains pyridine alkaloids — skin and respiratory toxicants
- Coal tar matrix PAHs and heterocyclic amines
- Aquatic toxicity from persistent nitrogen heterocycles
