Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Coal tar bases are complex mixtures of nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocycles including pyridine, quinoline, and aniline derivatives. IARC classifies coal tar as Group 1 carcinogen to humans. The conditional benzene flag adds further EU Annex II concern. EU Regulation 1223/2009 prohibits coal tar-derived substances in cosmetic products, and crude tar bases have no established safety profile for topical application. Industrial chemical only.
Known concerns
- Coal tar origin — IARC Group 1 carcinogen
- Contains quinoline and other confirmed animal/human carcinogens
- Benzene >0.1% w/w — EU Annex II prohibited
- Potential PAH and heavy metal contamination from coal source
- No established cosmetic function or SCCS safety opinion
