Aromatic-contg. petroleum naphtha is rich in C6–C9 aromatic hydrocarbons, with benzene being the primary regulatory concern at levels above 0.1% w/w. The aromatic hydrocarbon matrix includes ethylbenzene and C3-benzenes (cumene, cymene) which are also skin and respiratory irritants. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 this class of benzene-containing streams is banned from cosmetic use.
