Detailed Analysis
Zanthoxylum piperitum peel extract contains hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, flavonoids, and essential oil compounds with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mild numbing properties. CIR Expert Panel concluded it is safe for cosmetic use at described concentrations (up to 0.0022% in skincare) when formulated to be non-sensitizing. A 110-subject HRIPT with 2% concentration showed no irritation or sensitization. CosIng-listed as antimicrobial. The fruit/peel extract can cause numbing sensation and may irritate very sensitive skin. Distinguished from the more irritating CO2 extract.
