About XANTHAN GUM

A natural thickener made by fermenting sugar — gives products their creamy texture. Safe, gentle, and used in food too.

Detailed Analysis

Xanthan gum (CAS 11138-66-2) is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide produced by bacterial fermentation (Xanthomonas campestris). Functions as an emulsion stabilizer, gel former, and viscosity controller. The CIR Expert Panel concluded it is safe for cosmetic use. Also FDA GRAS as a food additive. Non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and non-comedogenic. Not absorbed through the skin due to large molecular size. Widely used at 0.1-2% to create stable, pleasing textures in creams, lotions, and gels.
