Frequently Asked Questions
Answers in plain language
Is selenium sulfide banned in Europe?
No. Selenium sulfide is permitted in EU cosmetics as an anti-dandruff agent at a maximum concentration of 1.0%, restricted to rinse-off hair products and not to be used near the eyes (Annex III entry 49 of Regulation EC 1223/2009). It is the active ingredient in several medicated anti-dandruff shampoos sold in pharmacies across the EU.
What are the side effects of selenium sulfide?
Reported side effects include hair discoloration (especially in blonde, grey or chemically treated hair), scalp irritation, dryness and rare contact dermatitis. The 1.0% cap and rinse-off requirement minimize systemic exposure. Avoid contact with eyes; do not use on broken or inflamed scalp.
