Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A highly ethoxylated oleyl alcohol (106 EO units) functioning as an extremely mild, water-soluble nonionic surfactant, ideal for gentle, sensitive-skin formulations.
Oleth-106 carries a very long polyethylene glycol chain (106 EO units) attached to oleyl alcohol, making it one of the most hydrophilic and mild members of the Oleth series. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not restrict this ingredient. The long EO chain essentially eliminates any concern about skin penetration and makes the ingredient behave like a large polymer, reducing systemic absorption risk. SCCS residual solvent guidance still applies for 1,4-dioxane.
Skin benefits
- Exceptionally mild surfactant ideal for sensitive and baby skin products
- Highly water-soluble, useful for clear gel and liquid formulations
Known concerns
- Residual 1,4-dioxane at trace levels must still be monitored
- Very low concern ingredient overall due to polymer-like character
