Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
C12-14 Isoparaffin is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
The C12-14 isoalkane mixture falls into the heavier range of commonly used isoparaffinic solvents in European cosmetics. The longer carbon chain gives slightly greater occlusive properties and slower evaporation, resulting in a more substantive skin feel compared to lighter isoparaffins. Like all hydrotreated isoparaffins, it must meet SCCS specifications under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 regarding purity from aromatic compounds and other petroleum impurities. Fully hydrotreated aliphatic hydrocarbons in this molecular weight range have an established safety record in cosmetic applications.
Skin benefits
- Delivers a smooth, silky skin feel with good spreadability
- Acts as a carrier solvent for oil-soluble cosmetic actives
Known concerns
- Higher molecular weight reduces volatility — more persistent on skin
- Must be certified free of aromatic hydrocarbon impurities for cosmetic use
