Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) seed powder is a traditional Japanese mechanical exfoliant used to slough dead skin. It is generally well tolerated when finely ground but, like any scrub, can over-exfoliate sensitive or inflamed skin.
Skin benefits
- Traditional gentle mechanical exfoliant (Japanese azuki)
- Plant-based alternative to plastic microbeads
- Mild on most skin types when finely milled
- May absorb excess sebum on oily skin
Known concerns
- Mechanical scrubs can cause micro-tears on sensitive or acne-prone skin
- Possible legume protein allergen for highly sensitised users
- Limited modern toxicology data specific to cosmetics
