About ULVA PERTUSA EXTRACT
A green seaweed extract (now properly called Ulva australis) with binding and thickening properties; rich in sulfated polysaccharides with skin-film-forming benefits.
Detailed Analysis
Ulva pertusa (retired INCI name — current correct name: Ulva australis) is a green algae (Chlorophyta) found in marine and brackish waters. The extract contains ulvan, a sulfated polysaccharide with excellent gel-forming and film-forming properties. Ulvan is structurally similar to hyaluronic acid and provides strong water-retention capacity. CosIng shows no EU restrictions. The INCI name was retired in 2015 and replaced with Ulva Australis Extract; cosmetic labels may use either during the transition period. The algae is non-toxic and widely consumed as food (sea lettuce).
