A synthetic 5-amino-acid fragment from the TAT protein of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1, investigated for potential skin penetration and signaling effects.
s-HIV-1 Pentapeptide-1 is a single-chain synthetic peptide produced to correspond to a fragment of the TAT (Trans-Activator of Transcription) protein from Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1). The peptide contains only 5 amino acids from the otherwise large (86-101 aa) TAT protein. The EU cosmetics regulation takes a cautious approach to ingredients derived from pathogenic organisms, even when reduced to small non-replicating fragments. While a 5-amino-acid sequence cannot encode pathogenic function, the ingredient name explicitly references HIV-1, which may trigger regulatory scrutiny under the EU's general safety requirements (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 Article 3). SCCS guidance on peptide safety from pathogenic sources should be consulted before formulation.
Function
Skin benefits
- TAT-derived cell-penetrating peptide sequence may facilitate topical delivery of co-formulated ingredients
- Small size (5 aa) reduces risk of immune recognition while retaining cell-penetrating properties
Known concerns
- EU cosmetics regulation applies heightened scrutiny to ingredients derived from pathogenic organisms, even as fragments
- Explicit HIV-1 origin may require additional safety data to satisfy competent authority review
- Formulators should confirm this ingredient passes the EU's general safety assessment standard
