PEG-80 BETULINATE
Safety score · 0–100
Fine
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A water-soluble derivative of betulinic acid (from birch bark), ethoxylated with PEG-80. Mild surfactant/solubiliser; standard PEG-purity caveats apply.
PEG-80 betulinate is the polyethylene-glycol-80 ester of betulinic acid, a pentacyclic triterpene from birch bark. Ethoxylation makes the lipophilic actives water-dispersible for clear aqueous formulas. Like all PEG-containing ingredients, the main contaminant concern is 1,4-dioxane (IARC 2B), controlled by reputable suppliers through vacuum-stripping to sub-ppm levels. Ethylene oxide residues are a secondary concern. No specific EU restrictions, no CIR monograph dedicated to this CAS; the PEG-ester class has broad CIR acceptance when purified.
Function
Skin benefits
- Ethoxylated betulinic acid — a solubilising and mild surfactant
- Combines birch-tree-derived actives with water-solubility
- Gentle skin feel
Known concerns
- PEG-80 ethoxylation — 1,4-dioxane residue concern if not purified
- Limited published toxicology
- Effect-claim data weak
