A polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivatives of a hydantoin compound, functioning as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent in cosmetic formulations. The PEG chain improves water solubility and hydration properties.
PEG-15 Dedm Hydantoin (also known as PEG-15 DEDM Hydantoin or DEDM Hydantoin) is the ethoxylated derivative of DEDM Hydantoin (1,3-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-5,5-dimethylimidazolidine-2,4-dione). With an average of 15 ethylene oxide units, this compound combines the skin-conditioning properties of the hydantoin ring with the humectant and water-solubilizing effects of the PEG chain. DEDM Hydantoin itself is used as a formaldehyde donor preservative (though a very mild one), and the PEGylation may reduce this tendency. PEG compounds raise some concern about potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a processing byproduct.
Skin benefits
- Humectant — attracts and retains moisture in skin
- Skin-conditioning agent
- Improves product texture and water solubility of formulations
Known concerns
- PEG derivatives may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (potential carcinogen)
- Mild formaldehyde donor potential from hydantoin moiety
- Not recommended for use on broken or eczematous skin
