Fine

Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.

A synthetic polyamide powder used as bulking agent and opacifier in powders and makeup. Low skin-penetration and non-sensitizing, but a microplastic under EU phase-out.

Nylon-6/12 (CAS 25191-04-2) is a copolymer of caprolactam and laurolactam used as bulking agent, opacifier and absorbent in loose powders, pressed powders and foundations, typically at 1–35%. CIR (2014, reaffirmed 2023) concluded nylon-6/12 is safe as used; dermal sensitization was negative at 1.4% in face powder, and monomers were neither genotoxic nor carcinogenic. The polymer is too large to cross intact skin. It is however a synthetic microparticle; EU Regulation 2023/2055 restricts intentionally added microplastics in cosmetics, with phased bans through 2029. Evidence level high for human safety, lower for ecotoxicity handling.

Function

ABSORBENTBULKINGOPACIFYING

Skin benefits

  • Bulking and opacifying agent with strong CIR safety data
  • Provides soft-focus and slip in powders
  • Not a dermal sensitizer at tested use levels
  • High-molecular-weight polymer with minimal skin penetration

Known concerns

  • Synthetic plastic microparticle — environmental persistence
  • EU microplastic restriction (Reg. 2023/2055) phasing out rinse-off and leave-on microbeads
