Frequently Asked Questions
Answers in plain language
Is methylparaben banned in Europe?
No. Methylparaben is permitted in EU cosmetics as a preservative at maximum concentrations of 0.4% (when used alone) or 0.8% (mixed with other parabens), listed in Annex V of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. It is one of the most studied cosmetic preservatives. Five other parabens (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, benzylparaben, pentylparaben) ARE banned in the EU, but methylparaben is not among them.
What are the side effects of methylparaben?
Concerns historically centered on potential endocrine activity, but the SCCS has repeatedly reviewed methylparaben and ethylparaben and confirmed they are safe at currently permitted concentrations. Rare contact allergy can occur in sensitive individuals. The "paraben-free" marketing trend is driven more by consumer perception than by regulatory science.
