About HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA BARK/LEAF/TWIG EXTRACT

Witch hazel extract — the classic toner ingredient. Great astringent for oily skin, but high tannin content can dry out and irritate sensitive or dry skin types. Alcohol-free versions are gentler.

Detailed Analysis

Hamamelis Virginiana Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract is derived from the witch hazel plant (Hamamelis virginiana L., Hamamelidaceae). It is very rich in hamamelitannins, gallotannins, proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids. The CIR Expert Panel concluded witch hazel-derived ingredients are safe when formulated to be non-irritating and non-sensitizing. However, the strong astringent action from tannins can compromise the skin barrier with overuse, and many commercial products contain significant denatured alcohol which compounds the drying effect. The extract functions as a skin conditioning agent with potent astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.
