GLYCEROL FORMAL
Safety score · 0–100
Good
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A dual cyclic acetal of glyceraldehyde used as a green solvent in cosmetics, with low acute toxicity and good skin compatibility.
Glycerol formal is a mixture of 1,3-dioxolane-4-ylmethanol and 1,3-dioxan-5-ol. It functions as a solvent and plasticizer in cosmetic formulations. Low acute toxicity (LD50 > 5000 mg/kg). No EU CosIng restriction applies. The acetal structure can hydrolyze under acidic conditions, releasing small amounts of formaldehyde-associated species, but at negligible levels.
Skin benefits
- Green solvent alternative
- Plasticizer in cosmetic formulations
Known concerns
- May hydrolyze to release minor aldehyde species under extreme conditions
