About GALEGA OFFICINALIS EXTRACT
Goat's Rue extract contains galegine, a hypoglycaemic alkaloid with documented animal toxicity and limited human safety data, making it a higher-concern botanical for cosmetic formulators.
Detailed Analysis
Galega officinalis contains galegine (isoamyleneguanidine), a toxic alkaloid with hypoglycaemic and goitrogenic effects documented in livestock poisoning. Galegine has been studied for antidiabetic potential but shows a narrow therapeutic index. EU Regulation 1223/2009 does not specifically restrict this ingredient; however, given the known toxicity of galegine and its structural similarity to metformin, use in leave-on cosmetics warrants caution and concentration restriction below 0.1%. Not recommended for sensitive skin formulations.
