Dobutamine hydrochloride [USAN:BAN:JAN] is a cosmetic ingredient used in product formulations. Its specific function may vary between products. Exercise caution due to limited available safety data.
Dobutamine is a synthetic catecholamine (3,4-dihydroxy-N-[3-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylpropyl]-phenethylamine) with direct positive inotropic activity on cardiac beta-1 receptors. It is administered by intravenous infusion in hospital settings for acute decompensated heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Its pharmacological activity as a cardiovascular agent is entirely incompatible with cosmetic use. The EU Cosmetics Regulation does not include dobutamine in any positive list; its prescription drug status and hospital-only administration preclude any cosmetic formulation role.
Known concerns
- Potent cardiovascular drug – IV hospital use only
- Beta-1 adrenergic agonist with significant cardiac effects
- Prescription-only medicine – no cosmetic application
- Not evaluated or authorized under EU cosmetic regulations
