Caution

Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.

An ethoxylated diethanolamine-based laurate ester used as a surfactant and emulsifier in cleansers. Modern formulators increasingly avoid DEA derivatives due to nitrosamine and free-DEA concerns.

Skin benefits

  • Functions as a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier in cleansers
  • Helps stabilise oil-in-water systems and provide foam quality
  • Useful in rinse-off detergent and shampoo bases

Known concerns

  • Contains a diethanolamine (DEA) moiety which can form N-nitrosamines with nitrosating agents
  • CIR cautions diethanolamides must not be used where nitrosamines can form
  • Free DEA monitoring required; skin amidases can release DEA in situ
  • DEA-containing ingredients have largely fallen out of favour in modern clean formulation
  • Possible skin irritation in leave-on use
