Emulsifier and surfactant
CETETH-1
Safety score · 0–100
Fine
Derived from EU CosIng regulatory status, PubChem hazard data and published research. How we score.
A lightly ethoxylated fatty alcohol used as a nonionic emulsifier in creams. It is generally considered safe but, like all PEG materials, depends on careful manufacturing to keep 1,4-dioxane traces low.
Skin benefits
- Nonionic surfactant and emulsifier suited to creams and lotions
- Helps blend oil and water phases without strong charge interactions
- CIR has reviewed the broader Ceteth family as safe for cosmetic use
- Low irritation potential at typical use levels
Known concerns
- Ethoxylated surfactants can contain trace 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide from manufacturing
- Low ethoxylation (PEG-1) means weaker water solubility and potentially higher film residue
- Quality depends on supplier purification practices
- Less commonly used than higher Ceteth grades like Ceteth-20
