Frequently Asked Questions
Answers in plain language
Is aluminum in deodorant banned in Europe?
No. Aluminum salts including aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium compounds are permitted in EU antiperspirants and deodorants. The SCCS most recently reviewed aluminum exposure from cosmetics in 2020 and concluded a safe systemic exposure level. Some retailers and brands voluntarily exclude aluminum salts, but no EU regulation bans them.
What are the side effects of aluminum in antiperspirants?
Common reports include mild skin irritation, white residue on clothing, and rare contact allergy. Historical concerns about links to breast cancer or Alzheimer disease have not been confirmed by regulatory or epidemiological reviews. The 2020 SCCS opinion concluded that cosmetic exposure does not exceed the tolerable daily intake.
