A hair dye ingredient used in both permanent and semi-permanent colors — safe within EU concentration limits, but an ocular irritant and requires careful formulation.
Detailed Analysis
5-Amino-6-Chloro-o-Cresol (CAS 84540-50-1) is an aromatic amine used as a hair colorant. The SCCS (2012) concluded it does not pose a risk at max 1.0% in oxidative and 0.5% in non-oxidative hair dyes. CIR (2022-2023) also found it safe at current use concentrations (up to 0.24%). It is an ocular irritant undiluted but not a skin sensitizer in LLNA testing. Dermal absorption is extremely low when combined with oxidative developer. Rapidly excreted via urine. PubChem CID: 157641.
